TAHPERD 2013 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year

Lauren Mikulencak

Pillow Elementary

Lauren Mikulencak is an elementary physical education teacher at Pillow Elementary. She has been teaching at Pillow since January 2006 after graduating with honors from The University of Texas at Austin. She has been a TAHPERD member since 2004 and is currently the secretary of the Elementary Physical Education section. Nationally, she is an AAHPERD member and is a NASPE certified director of physical activity. This summer she attended the National Physical Education Institute in Asheville, NC, and co-presented with the Austin ISD Physical Education and Health Supervisor and Specialist on their district’s physical education assessments. Locally, she is a Past Co-President of the Austin Association for Physical Education and Recreation (AAPER), the webmaster for the Austin ISD Physical Education and Health Website, hosts college student interns, observers, and apprentice teachers, and is an Elementary Physical Education curriculum writer for the district. She has presented at district meetings to classroom teachers, physical education teachers, AAPER members, TAHPERD conventions, and to a class at The University of Texas. Ms. Mikulencak was the Pillow Elementary Teacher of the Year and a Semi-Finalist for the Austin ISD Teacher of the Year in 2009.  The same year, she was the CATCH Physical Education MVP for Austin ISD.  Ms. Mikulencak volunteers at community events that encourage healthy-lifestyles for our youth such as Marathon Kids, the AAPER Cross Country Run, and the 5th Grade AAPER Volleyball Playday held at The University of Texas at Austin.  She is very dedicated to inspiring children and their families to live active lifestyles and develop healthy habits.  When she is not teaching, Ms. Mikulencak likes to participate in softball, bowling, and volleyball in addition to spending time with her friends and family.
